Half.com has always been an option for students looking to buy used textbooks at low prices. It was an alternative to Amazon when looking for cheap textbooks for school. Half.com even allowed a few third party textbook renters to rent textbooks through their site. Now, they have announced that Half.com will close on August 31, 2017.
Sellers were alerted to upcoming changes to Half.com on November 16, 2016, when Half.com sent out an email to their sellers about a selling fee increase. This fee increase brought the standard fee of 15% up to a maximum of a 25% fee. This caused Half.com sellers to increase the prices of their textbooks to compensate for the increase in fees. This also affected students who were using Half.com to sell their textbooks from the previous semester. The fee increase cut into how much money students were able to recoup from their previous textbook purchases.
This fee increase was in preparation for the closing of the Half.com selling platform and website. It will be in college students' best interest to not purchase their textbooks from Half.com for fall semester 2017. Since Half.com is closing, a better option for purchasing used textbooks is from Amazon.com and from Amazon.com third party sellers. The prices of used textbooks being offered for sale on Amazon.com by third party sellers is most often the cheapest prices you will find for used textbooks.
